St John of God Hauora Trust has launched a specialised outpatient physiotherapy service for stroke survivors in its Halswell facility.

“Recovery from stroke entails a unique and complex form of physiotherapy,” says Jack Haughton, General Manager for Rehabilitation and Therapy.

“We've provided this expertise to our long-term residents in Halswell for years. But this much-needed model is now open to the entire community.”

Nine thousand strokes occur each year, around one per hour. Eighty-nine thousand live with its effects, and it is a leading cause of adult disability in Aotearoa New Zealand, according to the Stroke Foundation NZ.

St John of God Halswell leverages the expertise of physiotherapists who have long specialised in stroke rehabilitation. The Halswell facility also features a disability-friendly gym and stroke-specific equipment. After an initial assessment, the outpatient service involves one-on-one hourly sessions tailored to individuals’ recovery needs.

“Stroke is a serious condition, but with therapy, survivors can still regain a level of mobility, independence, and confidence,” says Jake Gardner, Senior Physiotherapist at St John of God Halswell.

“Our goal is to help survivors reconnect with whānau, participate anew in community life, and do the things that bring meaning to their days.”

The new outpatient service offers a flexible fee structure, accepting self-referrals and referrals from healthcare professionals.
